Isn't one of the basic rules of handling a firearm "Know you target"? Shouldn't fighter pilots be trained to know their targets too? This is why it is difficult to believe the government when they say they don't know what they shot down.
And, if it were extraterrestrials, is shooting them down a good idea? It seems an undiplomatic way to greet intelligent visitors to the planet.
