Even though it is something that would generally be perceived as silly and unimportant, it is a deception. It makes me ask, - as it should - what else he would think worthy of deceiving people about? I would have liked to see him turn it into an asset for himself - say something like , "yeah, I'm wearing lifts, but I have to or I can't reach the (whatever item will get a laugh)". That would have made it much more acceptable. Or he could have tried on the shoes and told the host to auction the shoes for charity. But he didn't.
