What is conspicuously missing from both sides in the debate over gun control is that the purpose of the 2nd amendment is NOT self defense or hunting.
The purpose of the 2nd amendment is to ensure that the people (who are the grantors of governmental authority) always retain the power to maintain the republic or - should it be too far gone - to alter or abolish it.
"That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness." ~ Declaration of IndependenceThe tendency of the human heart is towards evil and the tendency of government is towards tyranny. These are the truths that the founders recognized when they were writing both the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution. Those truths have not changed, nor will they so long as humanity and government exist.
Were there a way that government could stop such mass murders, then the debate might be a reasonable one. But, there is no way for the government to prevent an individual from turning towards violence of this sort. There will always be evil people. There will always be hurting people. Criminals do not obey the law and if those bent on such actions cannot obtain a firearm, they will use a knife or a vehicle or an explosive or something else.
Those who would disarm the citizenry are calling for nothing less than the death and destruction of this nation. And, given that no amount of legislative gun control will stop those who are bent on committing these acts of violence, no number of shootings by those who embrace evil is enough to justify the destruction of the USA.
