America is all about the decisions of the individual. Don't allow yourself to be led or goaded into bad behavior. Good manners are for more than just tea. If you wouldn't want someone treating your husband/wife/friend to be treated as you are being encouraged to treat another, then you probably shouldn't be doing it and it may be best to discourage those who are engaging in bad behavior.
