The manipulation technique being used in the ad is called "The Argument From Authority" and it is a logical fallacy. (aka argumentum ad auctoritatem or argumentum ad verecundiam)
In this case citing "a lot of people who are smarter than you or me" is not a reasonable argument because there are also a lot of "smarter" people who hold opposing views.
